You’re Beautiful!

The anticipated (by K-pop idol fangirls everywhere) drama, “You’re Beautiful 미남이시네요” finally premiered yesterday.  Penned by the Hong sisters (Hong Gil Dong, My Girl), the drama shows the inner workings of the glitzy k-pop world with the boy band A.N.JELL.   The twist is that Park Shin Hye (Tree of Heaven, Goong S) joins the group dressed as a boy (replacing her twin brother.) Jang Geun Seok (Beethoven Virus, Hong Gil Dong), Lee Hong Ki (FT Island), and Jung Yong Hwa (C.N. Blue aka 2nd FT Island) star as the original members of A.N.JELL.  Click here for more (better) info.

And now the good news.  It’s very cute!  It starts off a bit “Sound of Music” with our protagonist Go Mi Nyu (Park Shin Hye) training to be a nun.  She’s always running around the convent, getting to mass late, and constantly causing trouble.  Just like Maria, this makes Mi Nyu quite endearing.  I was fully expecting her to twirl around singing, “The hills are alive…”  Because she’s lived in a convent all her life, she speaks very properly and always uses the honorific.  You already start wondering how she’s going to pass not just as a boy, but an idol.

The drama is very music heavy (as expected in a drama about an idol band), with pretty long stretches of all song, no dialogue scenes.  We’ll see how well they’ll be able to incorporate the songs into the drama.  I’ve already had my share of the song “Promise” and I’ve only seen episode 1.  But I also loved the scene at the airport where she thinks about her brother and her mother while listening to A.N.JELL’s “Without a word.”  The lyrics fit in quite well with the scene and it helped to express her fear and longing.

All the A.N.JELL members are well cast.  Lee Hong Ki is super adorable.  I’m not much of a FT Island fan so I didn’t know much about him, I can see why so many love him.  LSK scowls well and I fully expect that we’ll get to see the reason for it.

It’s definitely worth checking out.
