The Year of Bae Soo Bin

November 5, 2009

Bae Soo Bin‘s done well for himself this year, hasn’t he? He made the women of Korea swoon with his portrayal of the knight in shining armor – Park Jun Sae in Brilliant Legacy. On top of being in one of the most popular kdramas of 2009, he’s been a part of count ’em 6 projects in 2009.

Let’s take a look at his year, shall we?

Brilliant Legacy
In one of the year’s highest rated kdramas (32% average, 47.1% high), Bae Soo Bin turned heads playing a memorable supporting male character. His ever-loving Jun Se stuck with Eun Sung through thick and thin, and accepted her feelings for Hwan without compromising his character one inch. Who can forget the bike date with Eun Sung? Or the angsty boxing scene in episode 13?

Ae-ja
Bae Soo Bin does a 180 from his character in Brilliant Legacy for his role as Ae-ja’s hapless boyfriend. His Chul Min, Ae-ja’s boyfriend of 3 years, is a cowardly character who ends up cheating on his girlfriend and leaving her with a huge debt before running away. The movie stars Ae-ja (Choi Kang Hee, My Sweet Seoul) and her mom (Kim Young Ae) as the daughter/mother pair.

Flight aka Bisang
In the movie Bisang, Kim Bum‘s first lead role (not counting the Dream disaster), Bae Soo Bin plays a nightclub host. There hasn’t been much information out on his role in the movie, with most of the press coverage focused on Kim Bum and costar Kim Byul. Either way, released stills of Bae Soo Bin bodes well for his fans. Just take look at these pictures – HOTNESS. Bisang opens on 12/3.

Temptation of Angel [천사의 유혹]

In his first lead role (woohoo!), he plays a man scorned by his plotting wife. His character Shin Hyun Woo undergoes plastic surgery, and comes back with a different face to seek revenge. The character was played pre-surgery by Han Sang Jin (Sons of Sol Pharmacy) and finally underwent plastic surgery this past week, bringing in Bae Soo Bin as the post surgery Hyun Woo. Temptation of Angel is a male version of the popular makjang drama Temptation of Wife. I haven’t seen either one, but who doesn’t love a good vengeance story with massively evil characters.

Girlfriend

Bae Soo Bin returns to his Mr. Perfect self. Girlfriend stars newly married Kang Hye Jung (Oldboy, Tablo’s wife), Korean barbie Han Chae Young (Good Morning President), and Heo Yi Jae (19). Bae Soo Bin plays Kang Hye Jung’s girlfriend, but receives the affections of all 3 women in the movie. He expressed his contentment at filming with the 3 ladies, comparing the experience with Kim Byung Hun‘s movie Everybody has a Secret.

Telecinema Project: After the Wedding [결혼후에]

Lastly, Bae Soo Bin is part of the Telecinema Project with Director Kim Yoon Chul (My Name is Kim Sam Soon), starring Son Ye Jin (My Wife is Married) and Shin Sung Woo. After the Wedding is about 6 college friends and bandmates who get together 15 years later at a wedding, reliving their glory days. After the Wedding also opens on 12/3.

On top of his acting projects, he was in Lee Soo Young‘s comeback music video and walked for Andre Kim’s fashion show with Temptation of Wife‘s Jang Seo Hee. It’s good to see the tender-eyed actor keeping himself busy.

As a 33 year old, he’s seeing success fairly late in his career. Previous to the 2009 breakout, he won the 2008 SBS Best New Star award for his portrayal of King Jeong Jo in Painter of the Wind. He also played a eunich in the hit series Jumong, which gave him critical acclaim but at a cost. He revealed in a Ya Shim Man Man episode that he had a hard time getting cast after Jumong because of his female-like role.

On a personal note, he share about his 5-year relationship with his girlfriend in the same Ya Shim Man Man episode. With his busy schedule, he probably doesn’t have much time to spend with his gf. Either way, she’s one lucky lady. It’s nice to see an actor over the age of 30 tasting their first success. As a fan of good guys, here’s hoping to a great 2010!

He’s also featured in the upcoming November issue of Singles. Here are a couple pictures of the sexy Bae Soo Bin.
