“X-man” coming to a TV near you?

December 7, 2009

In our current world of remakes, it looks like “X-man” may be making a comeback. SBS will be broadcasting a special called, “Oh Brothers” this coming Christmas. The pilot, which will be filmed on the 15th, will follow the X-man studio reality show concept, and not the current trend of “real” variety shows (i.e. 1n2d, Family Outing, etc.).

The Christmas special will help determine whether the show will continue airing each weekend. “Oh Brothers” will have 1 male MC, a few mainstays, and 12-13 guests. They will be broken up into teams, pitted against each other in variety of games, basically the same concept as “X-man”. In order to bring a little freshness, they’re still working out the details of added elements to the show.

The show is focused on securing a top MC but it may be difficult with most of the popular MCs already working on a weekend show. It’s very unlikely that Kang Ho Dong or Yoo Jae Suk , who were instrumental in bringing popularity to X-man, will be involved in the program.

I absolutely LOVED X-man. It was entertaining in so many different ways: slapstick, fake love lines, sarcastic banter, toilet humor, amazing/bad/funny dancing… It got scandals started, notably Yoon Eun Hye and Kim Jong Gook‘s romance, which lasted throughout even with multiple rivals (Eric, Lee Min Ki, HaHa) vying for her attention. A recent episode of Family Outing had a flashback with Kim Jong Gook playing the “dang-hyun-ha-ji” (Of course) game with Jang Hyuk and Cha Tae Hyun, bringing back memories of the past. I miss X-man and watch clips on you tube once in awhile.

It’s usually difficult to bring back an old classic, but I’m hoping that “Oh, Brothers” can capture the magic of X-man. Here are a few classic clips with English translations!

1. Queen of Dang-hyun-ha-ji” Lee Ji Hyun (former member of Jewelry)

2. Newbie Lee Min Ki and Yoon Eun Hye

3. Jun Jin vs Andy

    uhm,, yay……
I love Xman, well particularly because Xman introduced me to kvariety
but maybe after I watched love letter, I like love letter better than Xman, but who can beat Jae Suk and Ho Dong?

I loved X-Man too, but methinks it’s still a little too soon to bring it back.

Dongwan’s Porn CD incident was the best, lols. I also enjoy Seunggi/Chae Yeon’s noona love story.

I think love letter was only really good with the shinhwa guys…
The show might do well since most variety shows are non-studio shoots. Have you guys seen dream season 2? I wonder how that’s doing… I loved the original.

I only watched the 1st episode, because of Junho 🙂 (I also watched half of ep 2, but I dont think I can continue watching it)
and I think it’s not that good, but to be honest the ‘dream team’ itself is really attractive, popularity I guess, 🙂
