Casting Roundup for “Housemaid”
That’s a buttload of beauty and talent. The 50th anniversary remake of Kim Ki Young‘s Housemaid has put together quite a cast. The thing that really grabbed my attention is the casting of Seo Woo as the wife with Jeon Do Yeon playing the housemaid. I’m glad to see that we should expect to see changes from the original, which featured a younger woman moving in as a housemaid to a couple with 2 kids. I’m a little sad that there probably won’t be any kids, who played a pretty integral role to the original.
I was also excited to see Lee Jung Jae taking on the male lead role. I can totally see him playing this cheating husband role. Along with the three leads, a Kim Ki Young favorite, Yoon Yeo Jung, has also joined the cast as the older housemaid in the home. She played the housemaid in the 2nd installation of the director’s housemaid series, Fire Woman.
I must say that I didn’t know what to expect to see when I saw Housemaid a couple of months ago, but it did not disappoint. I laughed, shrieked, cringed, and teared up during the movie. I loved the simplicity of the b&w film with minimum scene changes, where direction, writing, and acting are forced to carry a film. It wasn’t a perfect movie by any means but quite well made for a Korean movie from 1960. The film is also one of the films restored by the World Cinema Foundation, an organization started by Martin Scorsese to help preserve international films.
