1n2d: Extreme Winter Preparation Trip
I know it’s been awhile since I’ve had a recap but I actually just caught up yesterday. I thought about skipping the recap for this trip, but decided to just keep it brief instead. (The other reason for the brevity is that I’m in the middle of watching the dramabeans editor choice of the year: Kyung Sook, Kyung Sook’s Father, which is most worthy of that honor.)
After the brutal manual labor trip, the men are faced with more brutality as they are sent off on their annual extreme winter trip. The visual that I get when I hear extreme winter on 1n2d is the image of an almost naked Kim C wearing the box. And I was super glad to see the tradition continue.
This year, they head off to Kang-won province. The moment the opening is completed, the 6 men are told to run to a nearby bench and back. They all run off, with the exception of Ji Won, who pays the price by being carried off without any knowledge of his destination.
The rest of the men find out that each member will be taken to basecamp, one at a time, with the last one standing enjoying the most amount of free time (aka sleep). They decide to head out and eat the area specialty, tofu stew, where the next victim will be chosen. It’s a pretty a cruel decision, as Seung Gi picks out the empty rice bowl and is “escorted” out. (I like to eat ramen or something bad for me while watching 1n2d. It makes me feel like I’m part of the gang. But my pretty gourmet ramen seemed chintzy as I saw the tofu stew. I want to go to there.)
Ji Won starts out alone in the cold winter day, trying to build a fire with tiny branches. But eventually, all 6 members are together once again in their special 야생 [in the wild] uniforms.
But it’s not before the first 5 decides to punk the last member standing, Su Geun. Their plan is to get Su Geun to take a cold shower (just top half). It really is quite an elaborate plan that involves the hope of ramen, a game of rock/paper/scissors with PD Na, and a rigged ladder game.
Su Geun, pretty easily, falls for the trick, even though he walks into the base camp thinking that there might be some sort of plot against him. He sees Ho Dong lose rock/paper/scissors against PD Na (as planned), and then sees himself losing the ladder game. After getting water poured on his back, Su Geun decides to chance his luck and calls for a repeat. I mean, what are the chances that he’ll lose again? Hahaha.
The members’ eyes glisten as they hear Su Geun’s proposal for a second try. As anticipated, he’s completely befuddled to see that he’s lost again. But he completes the punishment by sitting inside the bucket of icy water and pouring water on his head.
Next up is the supplies for their overnight home. Ho Dong and Ji Won hit the badminton back and forth for as long as possible while Seung Gi runs back and forth, bring over the needed supplies. The two are able to keep the volley going for awhile, giving LSGi enough time to carry over quite a lot of supplies.
At this point, the national worker LSGn takes over and builds a pretty sturdy dwelling. It looks like stable, with the straw thrown on the ground, but good enough for a night’s sleep. Applause all around!
For the dinner bok-bul-bok, they need to win the ingredients to make kimchi 수제비 (which is basically pieces of dough and kimchi in anchovy soup. It doesn’t sound that appealing but it’s pretty nice in cold weather.) They ending up having to forgo the anchovy, potatoes, and squash by losing to the staff. (Dae Ju beats out MC Mong in a Survivoresque game of who can hang onto a tree the longest. hehe) This leaves them with just kimchi and flour as possibilities.
When they miss the category game (all members have to name something in a given category), Ho Dong offers a game of strip category to try and win the kimchi. And guess who stands up the plate to take one for the team? None other than Eun Cho-ding!
Unfortunately, it’s not the team’s night as they miss one after the other, making Ji Won take off one piece of clothing after another. Even the staff feels bad about their rotten luck and starts to throw out easy categories without any benefit: Girl’s Generation members, animal names with one syllable, sports played with a ball – to which LSGn yells out, badminton! Haha.
Eventually, EJW is left with just the box. And this time the box is much smaller than the one that Kim C had 2 years ago, barely covering his private parts. PD Na must really have felt sorry because he gives them the easiest category he can think of: names of female TV personalities. Thankfully, the men finally get through the category and win the kimchi! And as an added bonus, Ho Dong makes EJW sing a sechskies song in his longjohns. Puhahaha!
After earning the flour through playing human zero, they decide to put their 2 ingredients on the line to win the other ingredients. It must have been really cold that night because PD Na graciously offers ramen for EJW and LSGi if they lose, since the 2 of them didn’t get to eat lunch.
The play the ladder game with a 50% chance of winning. They converse about the possibilities and go with the thought that there are no connecting lines between the ladders. Unfortunately, it really is not there night as a single connection is revealed, making them lose out their 2 ingredients.
Finally, they decide to go for broke and try to double their 2 ramens by playing pogo sticks with the shovel (!) that Seung Gi carries around in his backpack. Dae Ju completes 4 while the really really unlucky 1n2d team member, LSGn falls over after 3, losing their last hope for dinner.
They head off to bed in their stable, hungry and tired. But mother nature has different ideas as she decides to bless them with a blizzard. The men are woken up in the middle of the night and taken down the mountain on ATVs. It’s a pretty arduous trip for the first group, having to walk halfway down the mountain because of the excessive amounts of snow. The 2nd team has a bit of a reprieve as they are driven down to meet the first team.
Even though the schedule couldn’t be completed, it’s a fairly stunning site as they trek down the mountain in the midst of the beautiful snow. (It totally made me miss my college days in the cold snowy winters of New Hampshire.)
These were nice little episodes but kind of pales in comparison to the next trip, doesn’t it? It’s like the staff decided to go for the gusto and show everyone who’s boss with 2010 coming around. 1n2d HWIGHTING!
